How To Reach an Underground Water Source When All Seems Lost

Posted on

If you've moved to the outback to set up your own ranch, you may be exploring new ground. If you have to set up some operations from scratch, you'll certainly be looking for underground water resources so you can create a well and be more self-sufficient. Yet this process may not be as straightforward as it sounds since underground rock formations may be in the way. If you have a limited amount of land to work with but must reach subterranean water somehow, what options do you have?

Horizontal Directional Drilling

In this situation, you should consider horizontal directional drilling. These days, sophisticated equipment and technology can be used to get to an underground destination, no matter what is in the way. This type of drilling is used whenever it is impossible to install a straight line vertically downwards. It's not a new practice, but it is far more precise now due to software, GPS positioning and the best equipment.

Advantages of Directional Drilling

When you bring in a directional drilling contractor, they will assess the situation and determine the best approach. They can pinpoint the location of the water and the various rock formations in between, should they be impenetrable. Using this approach, you can minimise disturbance as much as possible or make less mess in basic terms. You may also be able to stay on the better side of any near neighbours in this case and be sure that you are paying attention to the environment.

When this job is done properly, you will also reduce the risk of groundwater contamination. The engineers will determine the best entry point and draw up a plan to connect the dots on the way down. They may also use hydraulic jets but will focus on the latest drillbit specification as these tools are very adept at drilling through non-vertical angles.

Other Uses

Remember, horizontal directional drilling can be used to install other facilities as well, such as service conduits and underground cables. You may want to consider this if you are opening up virgin territory and want to connect different points on your property.

Drawing up a Plan

Get in touch with a directional drilling contractor to ask for their advice. They will analyse the drilling site and prepare a plan ready for action. You will then be able to access the water required even though your options may have seemed very difficult before.
