The right way to respond when you lose your keys

Posted on

Have you ever lost your front door key? Perhaps you spent the morning shopping and when you returned home you spent 10 minutes frantically searching your bags before concluding that your key wasn't in your bag or wedged in among the rest of your purchases. What do you do in that situation? The best outcome is that you have left a key with a neighbour who is always at home and you can simply collect your spare key and let yourself in. In the worst case scenario, you may not have any way to contact someone else with a key and you could be locked out of your home for many hours before you can gain entry to the property.

See the bigger picture

When you are stuck outside your home it is understandable that your energies are focused on the immediate problem of getting back into your home, but while that is certainly urgent it isn't the only problem. If you have lost your keys you have no way of knowing who may have found them. Did you leave them in the lock of your home? Were they left near your home or stolen with other items that could show someone where you live? Losing your keys makes your home vulnerable. With your keys in their possession anyone can enter your property at will, and that isn't a situation you can allow to continue.

Respond in the right way

Once your home is vulnerable you have only two options. One, you could ignore the problem. Perhaps you might visit a local locksmith, such as Border Locksmiths, and get a new key cut, but beyond that you don't do anything. That's the easiest choice but you might want to opt for a safer alternative. Just because your home has escaped being burgled so far doesn't mean that there isn't someone out there who has access to your keys and has been able to work out where you live. All the time you leave them with easy access to your property, you place you and your family in danger.

When you realise your keys have vanished, your second option is to call a 24 hr locksmith to come out and immediately change your locks. With new locks fitted you will be able to sleep easily at night knowing that only those you trust are able to enter your property without ringing your doorbell. Don't delay, call a 24 hr locksmith to secure your family home as soon as you realise there is a problem.
